Developed under the CSRD, these standards cover all three aspects of ESG reporting. They are designed to ensure the comprehensiveness and comparability of companies' sustainability information. To integrate sustainability data coherently and globally, the ESRS align with frameworks such as the GRI, TCFD, and GHG Protocol and standards developed by the ISSB.

Within the environmental (E) aspect of ESG, the standards cover 3 areas in particular:

Climate change mitigation and adaptation
Pollution
Biodiversity and ecosystems

By addressing these areas, the ESRS support the EU’s “green” taxonomy and push to the forefront the importance of natural capital, our planet’s natural assets. With this step towards more accountability, the ESRS requires companies to measure and report how their operations impact natural capital and affect or contribute to biodiversity and ecosystem services.
